The Legend of Mouthguards

Mar 03, 2025|

The mouthguard is an indispensable protective companion in many high-risk, highly competitive sports. They are not only found in combat sports such as boxing, but also in rugby, basketball and even snow sports.

Though seemingly insignificant, the history of dental protection has spanned at least seventy years. Back then, boxers used a variety of methods to protect their mouths: some stuffed their mouths with cotton or sponges, while others chewed on strips of glue or even a small piece of wood. These primitive 'dental' way, no doubt to the oral cavity has brought a lot of discomfort, the protective effect is also greatly reduced. It wasn't until 1890, in London, England, that a dentist named Woolf Krause, with his wisdom and ingenuity, invented the resin mouth guard. Although the mouthguard required the wearer to clench tightly and was not very comfortable, it showed remarkable results in preventing boxers from cracking their lips.

Wearing a mouthguard forces the wearer's mouth muscles to be in a constant state of tension, and the facial muscles tighten as well. When impacted by an external force, this tautness creates a natural reaction force that reduces pressure by increasing the contact area. At this point, all the teeth and gums in the mouth seem to be fixed as a whole, effectively resisting the potential damage of impact on a single tooth. There is an old saying, 'A single wire does not make a thread, and a single tree does not make a forest.' Mouthguards use this principle to build a solid defence for our mouths, protecting our teeth from the least amount of damage during intense races.
